Selling Hard On Corey Davis

Corey Davis Is Set Up To Fail

Corey Davis may have been a top prospect out of Western Michigan, but will he have the opportunity to be a top fantasy producer in the NFL?

Davis is coming to a Titans team that is known for their running game. Last year Marcus Mariota dropped back 500 times, attempted 451 times, and completed 276 passes. If you are a stats guy you know that’s not a lot of opportunities. There were only 3 QBs that posted lower numbers in those categories last year. Tom Brady (who missed 4 games), Ryan Tannehill, and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Other than the 5x Super Bowl champ, those are not great QBs to be lumped with. With Demarco Murray at the forefront, I do not see Mariota’s attempts going up. Murray had 293 rushing attempts in 2016. That’s more than half of the passing attempts the titans had last year. Unfortunately, Murray and Mariota are not the only players than can hurt Davis value.

Too Many Mouths

The Titans made moves, in addition to Corey Davis, to bolster their WR core this offseason. With Rishard Matthews underperforming, they reached out and secured another receiving threat in Eric Decker. Decker is a red zone monster. He finishing in the top 3 for RZ targets and TDs, from 2012 to 2015. Oddly enough, Mariota has never thrown a red zone interception in his NFL career. Harry Douglas and Tajae Sharpe also pose a threat, not a significant one, but they can take away targets. Delanie Walker is someone to worry about too, he was targeted 96 times last year.

I know Davis was a top 5 pick, but there is only one ball. With Mariota’s attempts being among the lowest in the league there are serious questions about Davis’s potential production. If you’re looking for a WR that will get a lot of touches, take a look at Mike Williams. Phillip Rivers loves to throw the pigskin around. Until the NFL starts using two footballs I’m fading Corey Davis.
