The PGA Tour returns to normalcy this week for the Wells Fargo Championship at Eagle Point Golf Club. Wells Fargo Championship | Breakdown
The Zurich Classic’s two-man format last week was something different for the PGA Tour. It was highly praised by players and many fans; however, for fantasy and daily fantasy purposes, it was…what’s a synonym for piss-poor? DraftKings did not have any PGA contests to enter. I, for one, didn’t mind much, though. Partly because I am a golf nut, but mostly because of the 100/1 wager I hit. Hopefully you took my advice in last week’s article.
Anywho, let’s move onto the Wells Fargo Championship. The usual host of this event, Quail Hollow, is prepping for the PGA Championship in August so the unfamiliar territory of Eagle Point is temporarily hosting in ‘17. Many have compared it to Augusta National due to the layout and type of grass, with some pine straw areas here and there. Fairways are “fairly” wide but positioning the ball will be key for approach shots. They say putting could be tricky on a few of the greens, too.
I will be targeting above average wedge players this week in the 100-150 yard range. Since the course is right on the Atlantic coastline, good wind players (low ball flight) should also be taken into consideration when creating your DFS lineups.
We’ve now witnessed three straight PGA Tour events with a first time winner. Cam Smith picked up his first victory last week after a four-hole playoff on Monday and with the help of a partner. I think this course design will bring the Tour back to earth and veterans who can adapt and quickly learn how to play a new course should be at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.
If you’re not picking up on my hints that I’m laying down pretty thick, I like Phil this week coming in at #21 in our rankings this week. Maybe not to win but I can definitely see a top 10 finish out of him. Same with Paul Casey at #4. Obviously Dustin Johnson (#1) is the favorite. His withdrawal at the Masters does raise some question, though. I actually think Jon Rahm (#2), although not much of a veteran, has a great chance. He’s been solid all year and his advantage is that no one else in the field has much, if any, course history. It should be noted that Carl Pettersson is in the field and a member of Eagle Point, along with holding the course record for lowest score, which could make him a good first round leader bet.
