Leonard Fournette or Dalvin Cook
Fournette and Cook are arguably the best two running backs in this year’s draft. Which back is more likely to make an immediate impact? This is the question some NFL teams need to decide. It’s not uncommon to have running backs surpass expectations and reach elite status in their rookie season. Look no further than Ezekiel Elliott. He showed just how dynamic a rookie running back can be. It should be noted, his talent was exemplified by the help of a ridiculously good offensive line. Just ask Todd Gurley if an offensive line matters. So, will Fournette and/or Cook have the same effect on a team as Elliott did?
Leonard Fournette
LSU running back, Leonard Fournette has some similarities to Adrian Peterson. He stands 6-feet-1 and weighs 230 pounds. He has had his share of major injuries in college and this puts his top end speed into question. Fournette seems to be one of those guys that gets better as the game goes on. He will need to be drafted by a team that is committed to running the ball. The more touches he can get the more productive he ultimately will be.
Mike Mayock reported that he could see Fournette going to the Carolina Panthers with the 8th overall pick this year. I think that would be a great fit for him, but my gut says the Jets snatch him up at the number 6 pick. For fantasy football owners, it would be exciting to see what this guy could produce behind Cam Newton. I’m not that intrigued by Fournette if he lands in New York unless they figure out their quarterback situation.
Dalvin Cook
FSU running back, Dalvin Cook has a slightly smaller build than Fournette. Cook stands 6 feet tall and weighs 214 pounds, but possess break away speed Fournette may not have. Dalvin has big play capability every time he touches the ball and will probably need less touches to make a big impact. He is not the bruiser type running back that wears down defense but has the capabilities to tote the rock late in games if needed.
He is expecting to go in the early part of the first round, but teams know he has had fumbling problems and nagging hamstring issues. This may have him slide in the draft. Right into the lap of the team with pick number 14. If you are an Eagles fan you know this is a good thing. Again, another guy who could step into an offense like the Eagles and make an immediate impact. Fantasy owners would love to see this happen.
Fantasy Football Hopes
Only time will tell if either of these guys can produce immediate numbers. If the teams mentioned above are lucky enough to roster these guys, both will be highly sought after in fantasy drafts this year. So, as a fantasy football enthusiast, I beg the Browns and the Jets to please pass on Day 1. Let these guys have a chance at fantasy football infamy.
