Cam Has Lost His Super Powers
Cam Newton came into the league being thought of as a super hero by Carolina fans. For a while, he was able to live up to this reputation. Until the SuperBowl loss. The end of the 2015-2016 campaign was rough for Newton. Carolina started 14-0, but were exposed come SuperBowl time. Ever since, Cam has been dealing with a Super Bowl hangover no amount of greasy food or cold showers can help.
No Help Needed?
So far this offseason Carolina’s front office has done the bare minimum for their QB. Newton’s O line did not do him any favors either, as they were in the bottom 10 for contact allowed. The first offseason focus should’ve been help up front, instead Carolina signed OT Matt Kalil who is no better than anyone they already have. Michael Oher must stay healthy this year too, Cam cannot continue to take hits to his blind side.
Offensive weapons have been a big issue for Newton since he was last in the Super Bowl. Sure Greg Olson is one of the best TEs in the game, but he can’t do it on his own. Kelvin Benjamin has come in this offseason horrifically over weight. What an interesting strategy since he has dealt with a major knee injury before. Devin Funchess was a disappointment as some thought he could take over the number 1 receiver roll. Ted Ginn Jr. who accounted for 34% of Newtons fantasy points last year is catching passes from Drew Brees. The passing and running game was bolstered by the addition of Christian McCaffrey, but he will be dealing with that shaky O line.
Cam Will Fly Again
If you’ve owned Cam Newton before, you understand the value of his rushing yards and touchdowns. Well, if you owned him last year you wouldn’t completely understand due to his rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns, and yards per rush being an all-time low. Also, his completion percentage was 52.9% which is the 6th worst in NFL history. I expect nothing to change here because of the rotator cuff injury and the concussion he suffered last season. The last thing Cam wants is to be the next RG3. Newton has the talent to bounce back and be a top 5 talent again, but with few productive offensive changes I don’t see much change in his numbers. Talk him up to your buddy, maybe you can bait him into drafting Newton. Other than that stay as far away from this former star as you can.
