The Monday Sports Review will take a look at some of the most interesting things that happened in the sports world over the weekend. I will dabble in some basketball, golf and NASCAR this week. Let’s jump right into the action.
Dustin Johnson Proves He is a True #1 at WGC Match Play
Dustin Johnson was hot! I’m not talking about the same kind of hot that we would use to describe his hot fiancé; I am talking about on the golf course. Johnson dominated his way to a WGC match play championship never trailing a single opponent throughout the entire tournament. He was able to hold off an equally hot Rahm (1-up) in the championship match. Johnson became the 1st player to win the WGC grand slam. He is currently second on the list for most WGC victories (5) only behind Tiger and his 18 wins. Congrats!
NCAA Basketball Continues the Madness
Over the weekend we saw the tournament narrowed down to the Final 4. We watched as Kansas, who a lot of people thought would win it all, fall to an Oregon team that has been heating up. This is the first time since 1939 that Oregon has made it to the Final 4. We also watched Gonzaga dominate an Xavier team that played tough throughout the tournament. Gonzaga handled them with ease and advanced to the Final 4 for the first time in school history. Speaking of making it to the school’s first Final 4, South Carolina was able to make a big second half run against the Gators. The swarming D of the Gamecocks was able to slow the scoring of Florida and end their tournament run.
Finally we come to a game that had emotions flying. We saw Monk bury a three with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 73 only to see Luke Maye make a clutch jumper with 3 seconds left. North Carolina was able to hold on and advance to their 20th Final 4. The Final 4 will be played Saturday and the winners will face off in the championship game next Monday.
Oakland Raiders relocate to Vegas?
The NFL will be holding its spring meeting this Monday. The biggest topic of this season is the potential vote on relocating the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas. Oakland’s mayor, Libby Schaaf, is asking owners to delay the vote in hopes of coming up with a plan to keep them in Oakland. Mark Davie, Raiders Owner, will need 24 of the 32 team owners to vote in favor of the move. The Raiders have called Oakland their home for 45 of their 58 seasons in the NFL. Jerry Jones, Cowboys owners, said “it’s going to be an exciting day for Vegas.” This leads me to believe the move is already a done deal.
Larson wins at Fontana
Kyle Larson, #42 in the program, but #1 in our hearts, was able to get the victory this weekend in Fontana, California. This puts a stop to his streak of 3 consecutive 2nd place finishes. Can this be the year Larson breaks out and pleases team owners? Everyone stated that Larson was the next big thing when he first came onto the NASCAR scene. With this win and his three consecutive 2nd place finishes, Larson is now leading the Monster Energy Cup points standing.
