Inside the Mind of an Athlete

It is sometimes easy to forget that college and professional athletes are human just like the rest of us. The pressure to constantly perform at a high level can cause mental strain which may result in poor play or odd behavior. Teams call upon sports psychologists to get inside the minds of athletes to help improve their emotional health.

With NCAA conference tournaments beginning this week and March Madness on the horizon, it feels like an appropriate time to recognize individuals, such as Dr. Megan Cannon. These specialists work behind the scenes to help athletes stabilize their emotions when mental tension runs rampant.

After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Wilkes University, Dr. Cannon received her Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southern University. She has served as an independent contractor with Mind of the Athlete since 2015 and maintains licensure in Pennsylvania and California.

Dr. Cannon has helped both team and individual athletes at all levels. She has worked with colleges and universities such as Old Dominion, Bucknell, Pittsburgh, Massachusetts, Lafayette, Lehigh, Duquesne, along with many others.

Dr. Cannon has appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter several times as an expert in sports psychology, see clip below. The Mind of the Athlete firm has also been featured in USA Today, NY Daily News, and on ESPN Radio.

As a fellow Wilkes alum, it is great to see the university represented in such a positive way. Congrats, Megan! Keep up the awesome work. Also, if my 30 & over basketball league free throw percentage keeps declining, you might be hearing from me.
