Who is the greatest dynasty in sports, ever? This question may go without ever having a definitive answer. In fairness, it will always be a matter of opinion, but here is a list of ones I think belong in the conversation.
NBA
Boston Celtics:
From 1959-1966 the Boston Celtics won 8 straight NBA championships. This was part of a 30 year stretch where the Celtics won 16 NBA titles. How many teams do you know that won 8 straight championships?
Chicago Bulls:
Led by the greatest basketball player on the planet(don’t @ me), the Chicago Bulls won 6 NBA championships in 8 seasons from 1989-1998. During that eight year stretch they has 2 runs of 3 straight championships.
NFL
Pittsburgh Steelers:
There is only 1 NFL team to ever win 4 Super Bowls in 6 years. From 1974-1979 the Pittsburgh Steelers became that team. In addition to that they, also won the AFC championship 8 times in 12 years starting in 1972. Considered by many the greatest dynasty in NFL history.
New England Patriots:
Over the last 15 years the New England Patriots have been in the Super Bowl 7 times. Winning 5 titles in the last 15 seasons. From 2001-2004 the Patriots won 3 of 4 Super Bowls led by Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. 10 years later from 2013-2016 the dynamic duo have won 2 of 3 more Super Bowls. The only franchise to have 5 SuperBowls in a shorter span are the San Francisco 49ers. They won 5 SuperBowls in 13 season from 1982-1995.
NHL
Montreal Canadians:
Possibly the most dominant dynasty in any sport, but definitely the most decorates. From 1956-1960 the Canadians won 5 consecutive Stanley Cup championships. Again, in the 5 year span from 1965 to 1969 Montreal went on to win 4 more championships. Finally winning 4 more consecutive Stanley Cup championships from 1976 to 1979.
Edmonton Oilers:
With the help of the greatest player to ever put on skates, the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup championship 5 times in 7 years from 1984-1990. Although this may be considered one of the greatest dynasties in history, the Edmonton Oilers have not won another championship since.
MLB
New York Yankees:
The New York Yankees could be on this list numerous times. It is why they stand alone in the baseball category. They are considered the epitome of dynasties. I decided to pick out just one of their many runs to greatness. From 1936-1939 the New York Yankees won an unprecedented four consecutive championships. If you take that stretch and carry it to 1941 they would end up winning 6 World Series championships in 8 seasons.
NCAA
UCLA Bruins:
UCLA men’s basketball team won 10 NCAA championships from 1964-1975, including 7 consecutive from 1967-1973. During this same period the Bruins finished with a perfect season on 4 different occasions. Still widely considered to be the most dominant college program ever in sports history.
Connecticut Huskies:
Currently in the heart of what could be the greatest dynasty ever seen in collegiate sports, the Connecticut women’s basketball team is now on a 98 game winning streak. If that wasn’t impressive enough this isn’t their first 90 game win streak in team history. As a matter of fact, its not the first one in the last 10 years. From 2000 to present day, the Huskies have won 10 National championships and have had 6 undefeated seasons.
