Sports Guys Give You Their Oscar Picks

Here at The Point After Show we don’t claim to be Hollywood experts. But, we love a chance for friendly competition and never pass up the chance for a friendly wager. So, we’ve decided to make our Oscar picks and see who knows the most about the movie industry!

The one with the most correct Oscar Picks will receive a crisp, brand new Lincoln.

The guys at The Point After Show, along with guest picker Mike Maher of    and , have made their Oscar picks. Follow along and let’s see how they do!

Best Picture

Nominees: Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight

  • Cavi – Moonlight
  • Paul – Hacksaw Ridge
  • Eddie – La La Land
  • Serniak – Hidden Figures
  • Maher – Manchester by the Sea

The field is absolutely split on this one. No one seems to have any sort of agreement. Maher’s love for Casey Afflect is undeniable. Eddie went with the sure bet, La La Land, who is the favorite with 1/5 odds. I’m going with Moonlight, because the Oscars LOVE a movie with a message.

Best Actor

Nominees: Casey Afflect, Andrew Garfeild, Ryan Gosling, Viggo Mortensen, and Denzel Washington

  • Cavi – Casey Afflect
  • Paul – Denzel Washington
  • Eddie – Casey Afflect
  • Serniak – Casey Afflect
  • Maher – Casey Afflect

I think it’s safe to say that we’re all fans of Casey Afflect. But, Paul doesn’t agree, he’s going with Denzel Washington. those two are the two picks with the best Vegas odds. So, nothing crazy to see here.

Best Actress

Nominees: Isabelle Huppert, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, and Meryl Streep

  • Cavi – Emma Stone
  • Paul – Natalie Portman
  • Eddie – Emma Stone
  • Serniak – Emma Stone
  • Maher – Emma Stone

Emma Stone and Natalie Portman have the best betting odds going into the night. That seems to be the agreement found here as well. I would personally like to Streep win, but she’s looking at 70/1 odds. Doesn’t look good for her. So, when Emma Stone wins, because let’s face it, La La Land is going to clean up, she should give her speech time to Steep. That would be ratings gold.

Animated Film

Nominees: Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle, and Zootopia

  • Cavi – Zootopia
  • Paul – The Red Turtle
  • Eddie – Kubo and the Two Strings
  • Serniak – The Red Turtle
  • Maher – Zootopia

We’re all grown men. Paul’s the only one that has kids. So, I’m going to say he has the most insight into this category. But, Zootopia is the front runner.

Director

Nominees: Damien Chazelle, Mel Gibson, Barry Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan and Denis Villenueve

  • Cavi – Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
  • Paul – Damien Chazelle, La La Land
  • Eddie – Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
  • Serniak – Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
  • Maher – Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea

Manchester by the see is the favorite among our pickers. Paul’s taking the safe bet, because La La Land is likely to clean up tonight. I’m going with Moonlight. Again, it has to win something, because it had such a strong message and really, does a movie about white people stealing black culture (La La Land) deserve a million Oscars? No, it doesn’t. So, don’t worry, it’ll win a ton.

Documentary

Nominees: Fire at Sea, I Am Not Your Negro, Life, Animated, OJ: Made In America, and 13th

  • Cavi – OJ: Made In America
  • Paul – OJ: Made In America
  • Eddie – I Am Not Your Negro
  • Serniak – OJ: Made In America
  • Maher – OJ: Made In America

I’m going to guess that the only movie listed anywhere on here, that any of us saw, was OJ: Made In America. The documentary is like 8 hours long. I literally spent an ENTIRE Sunday watching it on VICE. We’re also sports guys, so this was the likely pick.

Check back tomorrow for a follow up and to see how everyone’s picks played out.
